Percy Willis was born in 1890 the son of Robert a health department labourer and Emily Willis, née Haslam of 43 Mosley Street New Basford, Nottingham. His father was born in 1860 at Nottingham , his mother in 1865 also at Nottingham. Married in 1884, they had five children all born at Nottingham. Percy’s surviving siblings were Robert b.1885, Harold Antcliff b.1895 (killed in action 18/19/11/1916) and Gladys b.1904. In 1911 they lived at 43 Mosley Street New Basford Nottingham. Robert and Harold were hosiery trimmers.
Private Percy Willis enlisted in Derby and served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 10th July 1917 and is buried in Sunken Road Cemetery Fampoux. Grave Reference: I B
His brother Private Harold Willis, served with the 8th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment he was killed in action 18th-19th November 1916, aged 21. He is buried in Grandcourt Road Cemetery, Grandcourt. grave reference C.6 In Memoriam published 9th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- 'WILLIS. – In loving memory of our dear sons Percy, killed in France July 9th, 1917, and Harold, reported missing November 19th, 1916, now presumed killed. We who loved them sadly miss them as it dawns another year in our lonely hours of thinking loving thoughts are always near. – From loving mother, father, sister, brother & wife.'
