William Charles James John White

William Charles James John was the son of William and Alice Rosina White (née May). His father William White was born in Nottingham in about 1861 and his mother Alice Rosina MAY in Plymouth, Devon. William had enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry and was serving at Stonehouse, Plymouth, at the time of his marriage to Alice at Plymouth Register Office on 21 April 1888 (A/M/J Plymouth). The entry in the Royal Marine Marriage Registers confirms that he married Alice with permission and that he and Alice had two children: Amy Maud b. 3 April 1888 (A/M/J Plymouth) bap. Plymouth All Saints 25 May 1888 and William Charles James John b. 8 September 1892 (O/N/D Plymouth) bap. Plymouth St Peter on 22 September 1892. William snr. completed the 1911 Census and gave the information that there had been five children of whom only two survived. In 1891 William and Alice were living on Stoke Road, Plymouth, with their daughter Amy (3). By 1901 they had moved to 65 Beswick Street, Plymouth, where they were living with their two surviving children, Amy (12) and William Charles (8). William was still serving in the RMLI. Alice Rosina died in 1903 (J/F/M East Stonehouse Devon). The widowed William had returned to Nottingham by 1911 and was living at 2 No Man's Yard, Newington Street, with his son William (18). He gave his occupation as RM pensioner/Corporation labourer (Health Department) while William Charles was a cardboard labourer (book factory). William Charles married Sarah Ann Lacey (b. 23 June 1890) in 1914 (J/A/S Nottingham). William and Sarah were living in New Basford when he attested. They had a daughter, Nellie, in 1915 (J/A/S Nottingham); she probably died in 1918 (O/N/D Nottingham) when she was three years old. William's widow, Sarah Ann, married Jesse Barrowcliffe in 1919 (O/N/D Nottingham). The later CWGC record gives their address as 6 Durban Terrace, Fisher Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. However, in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled they were living at 59 Tunstall Crescent, Nottingham, with their daughter Louisa (b. 6 December 1923); Jesse (b. 23 March 1892) was a motor body builder, joiner and carpenter. Sarah died in 1966 (O/N/D Nottingham).
