Family History

James Henry Slack was the son of James and Florence Slack (née Needham). His father James was born in about 1872 at Sneinton, Nottingham, and his mother Florence Needham was born in Carrington, Nottingham, in 1871. They were married at Hyson Green St Paul on 2 March 1890 and had 12 children, two of whom died in childhood: Emily Annie b. Carrington July 1890 bap. Carrington St John the Evangelist d. 1893, Rose Ethel b. Carrington 1892, Gertrude Edith b. Basford birth registered 1894 (J/F/M), Florence b. Hyson Green birth registered 1896 (J/F/M), James b. Hyson Green 1898, Elsie b. Hyson Green 1901, Leslie b. Carrington 1904, Alfred Albert b. Nottingham birth registerd 1906 (J/F/M) d. 1908, Gladys May b. Carrington 1908, Winifred Alice b. Hyson Green 1910, Ernest b. Nottingham 1913 and Arthur b. Nottingham 1918. James, a Leivers lace maker, Florence, a Leivers lace mender, and their first child Emily, were living on Sherbrook Road, Basford, in 1891. Emily died two years later in 1893. By 1901 the couple had moved to Aston Terrace, Nottingham,where they were living with their five children, Rose, Edith, Gertrude, Florence and James. James and Florence were living at 5 Bateman Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham, in 1911. Their eight surviving children were in th ehome on the night of the census: Rose a Swiss embroidery worker, Gertrude and Florence who were hosiery winders, James, Elsie, Leslie, Gladys and Winfred. The couple's third son, Alfred, born in 1906, had died in 1908. They had two more sons, Ernest in 1913 and Arthur in 1918. James and Florence later lived at 3 Hollis Street, New Basford. James died in December 1931 and in 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled his widow was still living at 3 Hollis Street. Also in the household were two of her unmarried children, Winifred and Ernest, and her married daughter, Gladys Stanton (m. John Stanton, Basford St Augustine 1935, res. 3 Hollis Street). Florence died on 19 January the following year.

Military History

CWGC: Royal Fusiliers posted to 3rd Bn. London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Formerly TR/65130, 86th Training Reserve Battalion. Private James Henry Slack enlisted at Derby, home address New Basford, Nottingham. He was killed in action on 16 September 1917 and is buried in Buffs Road Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. E.20). CWGC - History of Buffs Road Cemetery (extract). The cemetery is close to the town of Iepres [Ypres]. 'Buffs Road was the name given to a small lane, which ran between Boundary Road and Admiral's Road, just to the north of the hamlet of Wieltje. The cemetery was made and used by fighting units (in particular by the 12th, 13th and 14th Royal Sussex and the Royal Artillery) between July 1917 and March 1918, and after the Armistice graves were brought into it (Row EE and part of Row B) from the battlefields.'
