Harry Newstead

Harry Newstead was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of Thomas Sarah Ann Newstead née Allen. His father Thomas was born in 1857 in Nottingham and his mother Sarah Ann Allen was born in 1859, also in Nottingham. They were married at St Ann's church, Nottingham, on 25 December 1880 (O/N/D Nottingham) and had four children all of whom were born in Nottingham: Louis Allen T. b. 9 October 1882 (O/N/D Nottingham), Harold b. 14 March 1884 (A/M/J Nottingham), Noel b. 1886 (O/N/D Nottingham) and Harry b. 1889 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1891 Thomas (43) a lace maker, and Sarah Ann (40) were living on Constance Street, Basford, with their four sons Louis (8), Harold (7), Noel (4) and Harry (2). The family had moved to 54 North Gate, Nottingham, by 1901. All four sons were still living at home: Louis (18) a joiner, Harold (17) a bricklayer), Noel (14) a basket maker and Harry (12) who was still at school. Thomas and Sarah Ann were living at 5 Rye Street, Basford, by 1911. Only Thomas (54) and his son Harry (22), a labourer, were in the home on the night of the census. Sarah Ann, described on the census as a 'nurse maternity', was living temporarily at 15 Skynner Street, Nottingham, in the household of William and Ada Jones and their baby son Sydney. Louis and Harold had now married and were living independently, Noel has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census. Sarah Ann Newstead died in 1916 (J/A/S Nottingham) aged 57. while Thomas died on 10 September 1925 (J/A/S Nottingham) aged 68; he was still living at 5 Rye Street, Basford. Harry married his wife Annie Dickinson (b. 11 June 1890) in 1915 (A/M/J Nottingham) and they had a son Harry b. 30 April 1916 (A/M/J Nottingham). According to a notice of his death in the local paper in September 1916, Harry's was living at 5 Rye Street, Basford, which was his parents' home. In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register, the widowed Annie Newstead, a lace worker, was living at 12 Welstead Avenue, Nottingham, with her son Harry, a miner ganger, and his wife Doris (b. 10 March 1914), a wool winder. Harry had married Doris (nee Boswell) in 1936. Annie died in 1969 (J/A/S Nottingham); her son Harry may have died in 1967 A/M/J Nottingham). Of Harry's brothers: Louis Allen married Gertrude Birch (b. 2 May 1882) in 1907 and they had two children, Edna May b. 8 May 1908 (A/M/J Nottingham) and Louis b. 1914 d. 1957. In 1911 Louis (28), a carpenter, Gertrude (27) and Edna (2) were living at 77 Maud Street, Nottingham. Louis may have served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps (R/7071). In 1939 Louis, a joiner, and Gertrude were living at 3 Beaconsfield Street, Nottingham, with their married daughter Edna Tarbox and her husband Sidney E. Tarbox (b. 11 August 1907). Their son Louis, a general labourer, had married Hilda Grainger (b. 17 February 1915) in 1939 (A/M/J Nottingham) and were living at 1 Runswick Drive, Wollaton Road. Louis snr. died in 1965 (J/A/S Nottingham). Harold married Lucy Hannah Rayworth (b. 18 January 1884) at Basford Church on 22 December 1906 (O/N/D Nottingham) and they had at least two children, a daughter who died when she was seven days old and Cyril Robert b. 18 March 1909 at 7 Rye Cottages. The family was still living at the same address in 1911; Harold was working as a bricklayer. Harold served in the Royal Engineers during the war (see 'Extra information'). At the time he enlisted he was living at 113 Bobbers Mill Road, Nottingham, and was still at the same address in 1939. By now Harold was a foreman bricklayer. He died in 1970 (J/A/S Nottingham). His son Cyril married Nellie Hunt (b. 11 July 1912) in 1937 (J/A/S Nottingham); he died in 1998 (O/N/D Nottingham). Noel married Sarah J Rayworth in 1916 (A/M/J Nottingham). He died in 1928 (J/A/S Nottingham) aged 41.
