George Cyril King was born in 1893 in Arnold and was the son Eliza Dexter née King of 77 Mill Street, Old Basford. His mother Eliza King married in 1894 to George Dexter b1871 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Florence Dexter b1896, Alma Dexter b1899, John Dexterb1902 and Lawrence Dexter b1908, all were born in Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 61 Mill Lane Old Basford and are shown as George Dexter 40 yrs a labourer he is living with his wife Eliza 36 yrs and their children Florence 15 yrs a lace mender, Alma 12 yrs , John 9 yrs and Lawrence 3 yrs. The soldiers' effects register shows his sole legate as Eliza Dexter
Lance Sergeant George Cyril King enlisted on 29th June 1908 at Nottingham into the Special Reserve, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 4 months, his occupation as farm labourer and his address as 77 Mill Street, Old Basford, his next of kin was his mother Eliza of the same address. He was stationed in India from 13th December 1911 and on the outbreak of the war returned to England on 2nd September 1914. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and on 11th March 1915 was promoted to Lance Corporal and to Lance Sergeant on 18th April 1915 . He was killed in action on 9th May 1915 at Aubers Ridge and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
