Albert Fowkes was born in 1892 at Nottingham and was the son of Benjamin Fowkes a lace maker and the late Elizabeth Fowkes née Richardson of Radford. His father Benjamin was born in 1854 at Radford, his mother Elizabeth Richardson was born in 1858 at Nottingham, she died in 1900 aged 43 yrs they were married in 1876 at Radford and had the following children, Mary b1877, William b1879, Sarah b1881, Alfred Benjamin b1883 and Alfred b1892 , all were born in Nottingham except William who was born in Tamworth In the 1911 census Albert is living at 93 Lambert Street, Nottingham, he is shown as being 19 yrs of age, single and a lace threader, he is living with his older married brother William Fowkes 32 yrs a stationary engine driver and his family. Albert Fowkes married his wife Alice Mellors (born 24th June 1895 ) in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 10 Olive Square, Palm Street, Ne Basford, they went on to have a son Albert born 23rd April 1915. Following his death his widow Alice was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 12th March 1917.
Private Albert Fowkes enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 5th October 1915 and was killed in action on 1st July 196 the First day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
