Family History

Bert Powers was born in 1891 at Wilburton, Cambridgeshire, he was the son of Thomas a farm foreman and Rebecca Powers née Edwards Flawford Cottages, Barnby, Newark. His father Thomas was born in 1861 at Wilburton and his mother Rebecca Ann Edwards was born in 1869 at Haddenham, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1889 their marriage was recorded in the Ely Registration District, they went on to have the following 5 children, George Edwards b1886 Wilburton, Mabel b1889 Wilburton, Bert b1891 Wilburton, Maud b1902 Wilburton and Harold b1906 Barnby, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at Flawford, Barnby, Newark and are shown as Thomas 50 yrs a farm foreman, he is living with his wife Rebecca 42 yrs and their children, George 24 yrs a horseman on a farm, Maud 22 yrs no occupation listed, Bert 20 yrs a cowman on a farm, Maud 9 yrs and Harold 5 yrs.

Military History

Private Bert Powers enlisted at Newark, he initially served with the service number 44768 in the Lincolnshire Regiment, he was later transferred to the Labour Corps and given the service number 239338. He died on 21st December 1917 at the Newark General Hospital, the cause of his death was a lymph adenoma. He is buried at Newark-upon-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.
