William Shaw Cleary was born in 1896 at Nottingham and was the son of Alfred James a book binder and Annie Cleary née Shaw of 41 Duke Street, Basford, Nottingham. His father Alfred James was born in 1866 at Liverpool, his mother Annie Shaw was also born in 1866 at Birmingham, they were married in 1889 at Nottingham, they went on to have 3 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Annie Louise born 1892 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Hedderley Street, Nottingham and are shown as Alfred James Cleary 45 yrs a book binder, he is living with his wife Annie 45 yrs and their children Annie Louise 19 yrs a lace mender and William Shaw 15 yrs a book binder

Military History

Private William Shaw Cleary enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at New Basford, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action on 17th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
