Alfred William James was born in 1896 the son of Alfred a china dealer and Emma Hawkins née Wyatt. He was baptised at Newhall Derbyshire on 2nd February 1896. His father was born in 1853 in Wyerley, Staffordshire, his mother in 1859 in Appleby, Derbyshire, Married in 1878 they had eleven children. Alfred's siblings surviving infancy were Esther b.1882 Church Greasley, Emma b.1885 Hartshorne, Ellen b.1888 Hartshorne, Laura b.1890 Newhall, Edith b.1894 Newhall, Lillian b.1898 Newhall and Walter b.1900 Newhall. In 1901 they lived at 95 High Street Newhall and in 1911 at 13 Maud Street New Basford Nottingham.
Alfred Hawkins enlisted in Nottingham on 7th February 1914. He was posted as a gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery and joined them at Woolwich Barracks on 12th February 1914. He went to France and served with with “O” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery landing on 16th August 1914. He served on the Western Front until 28th August 1915 when he was returned to England suffering from tuberculosis and treated at Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham. Following treatment he was found to be permanently unfit for further service and on 31st October 1915 was discharged from the Army under King's Regulations 392 (XVI). He died of tuberculosis on 12th June 1916.
Having been discharged from the Army prior to his death he is not recorded as a casualty of war by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and does not appear on commissions website. In memoriam notice published 12th June 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- HAWKINS. – In loving memory of Alfred Hawkins, late gunner R.H.A., who passed away June 12th, 1916.
