William Stanley Sudbury was born in 1898 ay Nottingham known as Stanley by his family and was the son of William Bennett a hosiery manufacturer and Hannah Sudbury née Mellor of 9 Regent Street, New Basford. He father William was born in 1870 and his mother was born in 1869, both were born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, they were married in 1892 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Nottingham , Frank b1893, Dorothy b1895, William Stanley b1898, Mary b1903 and Charles b1906 In 1901 they lived at 27 Trinity Avenue Lenton Nottingham. By the 1911 censes the family are living at 9 Regent Street, New Basford and are shown as William 41 yrs a hosiery manufacturer, he is living with his wife Hannah 42 yrs and their children, Frank 18 yrs an assistant manager in hosiery factory, Dorothy 16 yrs a scholar, Mary 8 yrs a scholar and Charles 5 yrs a scholar In 1911 census William Stanley has left the family home , he is 13 yrs of age and is boarding at the Boys' Grammar School 1 London Road Thetford St Mary Norfolk.
Lance Coporal Stanley Sudbury, served with the 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 20th July 1915 and was killed in action on 20th August 1916. He is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, grave reference 11.A.6
