Son of the late George and Phoebe Bray, of Stainland, Halifax; husband of Emily M. Oakes (formerly Bray), of Hopewell House, Robin Hood, Wakefield.(CWGC) 1901 census, ref: 21/62: 62 Lowood Green, George (head) age 57, Ann P[Phoebe] (wife), Edith d. age 30, Hannah d. age 28, Miranda d. age 26, Bethuel Bray s. age 23, Robert W s. age 20, Minetta d. age 18, Vincent s. age 16 (pupil teacher), Olive d. age 13, Leah M d. age 12. 1911 census living in Wakefield as a boarder with Richard and Charlotte Hartley and employed as a clerk (education department) with the county council.
Private Vincent Bray, 79th Sanitary Section, Royal Army Medical Corps, died on 18th August 1916 of dysentery and is buried in Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery. Army Service Record has not survived. According to the entry in the NCC register (see below) which was completed by his widow, he enlisted in August 1915.
Listed in Nottinghamshire County Council register of employees who served (Nottinghamshire Archives CC CL 2 /12/1/1) Nottinghamshire County Council minutes, Education Committee Elementary 26 October 1915, item 27 'Office Staff': Three of the office staff have enlisted during the quarter, Mr Bray, a clerk in the general office. Education Committee Elementary Finance 31 October 1916. item 24 'Office Staff': They have to report with regret the inclusion of two of their clerks in the casualty lists. Private V Bray RAMC, who had been employed in the Schools Requisition Department since January 1914, has died of dysentery at Salonika. He was an efficient servant and a particularly cheerful and willing worker. Finance Committee 30 January 1917, item 1 'Clerical Staff at the Shire Hall': One clerk, Bray, has died of dysentery in Salonica. Death notice published 26th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BRAY. – On August 16th, of dysentery, Private Vincent Bray, aged 32 years, 1st City of London Sanitation Company, beloved husband of Emily M. Bray, Hopewell House, Robin Hood, Wakefield, and West Bridgford, Nottingham.” Article published 26th August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NOTTS. EDUCATION COMMITTEE'S GENEROUS ACTION. “The Notts. Education Committee have decided that the proportion of salary which has been paid to Private V. Bray, R.A.M.C., during his absence on service shall be continued to his widow for the present. Before joining the colours Private Bray was employed in the schools' requisition department by the committee, who have expressed sympathy with the widow, and also with the parents of Lance-Corporal H.
