John was the son of William an agricultural labourer and Annie Fox. In 1901 he was living at West Markham with his widowed father and his sister Phoebe who was eleven.
John enlisted in Retford and first entered a theatre of war in France, on 18th May 1915 . He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Panel 10C 10D & 11A
Pte J E Fox Retford Times 11 May 1917News has been received by Mrs C E Barton of Weston that her nephew, Private J E Fox of the Sherwood Foresters has paid the great sacrifice. He was 22 years of age and was killed in action in France on April 14th. Much sympathy is felt with Mr and Mrs Barton and family in their sad bereavement. The captain of his regiment writes:- “Your nephew, Pte Fox, was killed by a machine gun bullet on the early morning of the 14th of April. It was during an attack. Your nephew was in the front line and was killed instantly. He was a brave and gallant soldier and you have my deepest sympathy in your loss which is shared by the officers, NCO’s and men of this company. He was buried near Gonuelieu, near Peronne.
