Family History

George Henry Steed was born in 1895 at Horwich, Lancashire and was the son of Jonathan Davis Steed and Sarah Ann Steed of Temple Norton, Chesterfield. His father Jonathan was born in 1857 at Bromyard, Hertfordshire, his mother Sarah Ann was born in 1859 at Chipping Camden, they were married C1881 and went on to have the following children, Alfred b1881 Bala, North Wales Susannah b1882 Horwich, Charles William b1888 Horwich, Jonathan Davis b1890 Horwich, Ellen b1891 Horwich, Albert George b1891 Horwich, Annie b1893 Horwich, George Henry b1895 Horwich, Samuel b1898 Bolton and Thomas b1901 Bolton. In the 1911 census George Henry is living at 93 Bonds Main Cottage, Temple Norton Chesterfield , he is living with his father and they are shown as Jonathan Steed 49 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his son , George 17 yrs a pony driver in cola mine also living at the address is Ada Knight 21 yrs of age (born at Ollerton) she is a house keeper and is single. George Henry married Annie Ada Knight (born 6th December 1885) on 20th June 1911 at Temple Normanton parish church, Chesterfield and they live at Walesby village, Nottinghamshire they have the following children, Margaret Elizabeth born 4th October 1911 Chesterfield, Violet May born 14th December 1912 Chesterfield and George Henry born 10th April 1917 at Kneesall. Following his death his widow Ada was awarded a pension of 30 shillings and 10 pence a week which commenced on 2nd December 1918.

Military History

Private George Henry Steed enlisted on 2nd September 1914 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, giving his age as 20 yrs and 166 days and his occupation as that of a labourer, he was posted to the 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He landed in France on 29th July 1915 and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st May 1917 and to Corporal on 26th June 1917. He was killed in action on 22nd March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
