Family History

Thomas Richard Guy (known as Guy) was the son of Edward Francis and Edith Constance Usborne (nee Upton) and the grandson of Mrs James Upton of Thurgarton Priory who donated the Thurgaton war memorial. Edward Francis Usborne was born in Writtle, Essex, on 30 March 1873. Edith Constance, the daughter of James Richard and Constance Upton, was born in London on 27 January 1875 bap 28 February 1875 St Gabriel, Warwick Square, Pimlico. Edward and Edith were married at St Saviour's church, St George's Square, Pimlico, in 1897 (A/M/J St George Hanover Square London) and had three children: Hermione Mary b. Writtle 18 February 1898, Thomas Richard Guy b. Writtle 9 October 1900 (O/N/D Chelmsford Essex) and Francis Philip b. Thurgarton 10 January 1907 (J/F/M Southwell). In 1901 Edward (28), a brewery director, and Edith Constance (26) were living at 'Motts', Writtle, Chelmsford, Essex, with their daughter Hermione (3). Edward and Edith employed a nurse (domestic), cook and parlourmaid.By 1911 Edward (38), of 'independant means', and Edith (36) were living at Thurgarton Priory, Nottinghamshire. Two of their three children were in the home on the night of the census: Hermione (13) and Francis (4). It is likely that Guy, who would have been nearly 11 years old, was at boarding school; he entered the Royal Navy two years later in 1913. Edward and Edith employed six staff including a cook.His father served in the Royal Fusilers 23rd (Service) Battaltion during the war. In 1939 at the time of the England & Wales Register Edward and his wife were living at Netley Abbey, Leigh Grange, Winchester, Hampshire; Edward was of 'independent private means'. Edith died in 1941 (J/F/M Winchester) aged 66 and Edward in 1961 (A/M/J Winchester) aged 88.Of Guy's siblings:Hermione Mary became a medical practitioner and in 1939 was living at 380 Slade Lane, Manchester. She married Lindley Henshaw in 1942 (J/A/S Newton le Willows, Lancashire) and died in 1987 (A/M/J Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland).Francis Philip married Bridget M Atkey in 1938 (J/F/M Winchester) and died in 1980 (O/N/D Southampton).

Military History

H.M.C.M.B. "No. 792"Thomas entered the Royal Navy on 15 September 1913 as a cadet and then joined as a midshipman on 9 January 1917, later promoted sub-lieutenant.He was killed in the fleet action against the Bolshevik forces at Kronsdadt on 18 August 1919. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

Thomas is also commemorated on the war memorial in Bursledon, Hampshire (WMR 21097) Guy's cousin, Thomas Francis Joseph Upton, served as a Captain in the 1st Bn King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and was killed on 8 November 1918 age 23 (Semousies Churchyard). He was also commemorated on the Thurgarton memorial as his parents, Archer Mowbray and Charlotte Leybourne Upton, had lived at the Priory. Archer Mowbray Upton (b. 1869) was the brother of Edith Constance Usborne, Guy's mother.
