James Alick was the son of James Johnson and Marry Ann Hawkins. In 1911 they lived at 8 Leonard Drive Denman Street Radford Nottingham.
James Alick Hawkins enlisted in Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters later transferring to the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. He was reported to have been killed in action on 20th February 1916. However, the battalion war diary confirms he was almost certainly killed the previous day during a German raid on their position.
Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 3 C and 3 D Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 20th February 1917 read:- “HAWKINS. – In loving memory of our dear boy, Private Alick Hawkins, Lancashire Fusiliers, killed in action February 20th, 1916. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother and father. “HAWKINS. – In loving memory of our dear Alick, killed in action February 20th, 1916.
