Ernest was born on 27 July 1888, the son of Ruth Fisher (b. abt 1852). His mother married David Beetles in 1895 (J/A/S Nottingham). Ernest joined the Royal Navy in 1906. His mother was living at 3 Commercial Street, Spring Close, Lenton, Nottingham, at the time of his death in 1916. She was still living at the same address when the CWGC record was compiled some years later. Ruth Beetles died in 1928 (Jun Nottingham) aged 76.
Ernest joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 21 June 1906 and entered on a 12 year engagement on his 18th birthday, 27 July 1906. In 1911 he was serving as an Able Seaman in HMS Melpomene, listed as in the geographical region of 'Australia and South Africa'. Service record annotated ‘NP4060/1916. DD [discharged dead] 31st May, 1916. Killed in action’ Ernest was serving in HMS Invincible when he was killed at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. His body was not recovered for burial and he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. At Jutland Lützow and Derfflinger fired three salvoes each at Invincible and sank her in 90 seconds. At least one 305 mm (12-inch) shell from the third salvo struck her midships 'Q' turret. The shell penetrated the front of 'Q' turret, blew off the roof and detonated the midships magazines, which blew the ship in half. The explosion possibly ignited 'A' and 'X' magazines. 1026 officers and men were killed, including Rear-Admiral Hood. There were only six survivors picked up by Badger. (Wikipedia)
