Family History

Joseph Chell was born on 28th March 1883 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire, he was baptised on 13th April 1883 at Ashbourne he was the son of the late Edward a general labourer and the late Lucy Chell née Hill of Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Edward was born in 1851 at Clifton, Derbyshire, he died in 1907 aged 57 yrs, Lucy Hill was born in 1853 at Sturston, Derbyshire, she died in 1902 aged 49 yrs, they were married on 20th July 1872, at Clifton, Derbyshire, they had 10 children, they later lived at 86 Park Street, Lenton. Joseph married Hannah Yeomans (born 30th December 1875) on 30th May 1908 at St Oswalds, Ashbourne, she brought a child to the marriage Edith Yeomans born 12th April 1904, they had 3 further children, Frederick born 17th September 1908, Leslie born 28th March 1912 and Eliza born 10th February 1914, they lived at 106 Park Street, Lenton. Commencing 16th October 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings a week.

Military History

Private Joseph Chell enlisted on 4th September 1914 at Hucknall. He was 30 yrs and 156 days, he was a cotton doubler and lived at 106 Park Road, Lenton he was posted to the 7th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 14th July 1915, he was killed in action on 25th March 1916, he is buried at Cite Bonjean, Military Cemetery, Armenttieres, France.

Extra Information

Two of his brother also served and died in the ‘Great War’ Fred Chell born 1893 served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, whilst on active service he developed Tuberculosis and was discharged from the Army on 13th November 1918, he died and was buried on 18th November 1918 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Samuel Chell born in 1891 at Ashbourne, served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he served from 2nd June 1908 and was discharged 30th December 1914 due to wounds, he was awarded a Silver War Badge number 207452. He died on 3rd January 1918 of tuberculosis and was buried on 7th January 1918 , additional information Peter Gillings
