Family History

Charles Baylay was baptised on 22nd January 1876 at Thurgarton parish church, he was the son of Atwell Mervyn Yates a vicar and Alice Maud Baylay née Davies, Atwell Mervyn Yates was born in 1843 in Kent, Alice Maud Davies was born in 1857 at Cambridge they were married on 8th April 1874 at St Mary's Church Kempley, Gloucester they had 9 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, In 1881 they lived on Vicarage Road Thurgaton Nottinghamshire. They were still in Thurgarton village in 1911 , Atwell 68 yrs is a clerk in holy orders, living with his wife Alice Maud 53 yrs and two of their children, Arymnel 21 yrs and Mary 19 yrs. Charles married Ethel Marion Payne (born 18th September 1877 Bromley) at Bromley (J/A/S/1907) and they had a son John Atwell Baylay. born 15th July 1909 at Warlingham they lived at Ripley House, Delaware Road, Bexhill on Sea. In 1911 they lived at Edbrook Walsingham Surrey. Commencing 7th January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Private Charles Baylay enlisted at Bromley, Kent whilst residing at Bromley, serving with the 7th battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 2
