Family History

Joseph Rear was born in 1898 at North Kyme and was the son of John a water engine driver and Ann Rear née née Toulson of North Kyme, Lincolnshire. His father John was born in 1860 at North Kyme and his mother Ann Toulson was born in Billinghay, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford Registration District, they went on to have 13 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Lucy b1884, Fred b1886, James b1886, William b1889, Harriett b1891, George b1893, David 1895, Joseph b1898, Alice b1900 and Harry b1909 all were born in North Kyme. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Kyme and are shown as John 51 yrs a water engine driver, he is living with is wife Ann 45 yrs and their children, William 22 yrs a farm labourer, Joseph 13 yrs a scholar, Alice 11 yrs a scholar and Harry 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Lance Corporal Joseph Rear enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at North Kyme, he served with the 1/4th battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 20th April 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

His brother David Rear also enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Billinghay, Lincolnshire , he served with the 1/4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and was also killed in action on 20th April 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Both brothers are commemorated on the North Kyme war memorial
