Samuel was born in 1884. He married Elizabeth Ann Dyer born 1887 at Nottingham in 1904 and they had four children all born in Old Lenton Nottingham: Samuel b.1906, Grace Lily b.1907, Beatrice Annie b.1909 and Gertrude b.1910. In 1911 the family was living at 15 Churchill Street Old Lenton.
Samuel Chaplin enlisted in Nottingham and landed in France on 29th November 1914. In December 1915 the battalion was transferred to Basra. He was killed in action on 7th January 1916 during one of the attempts to relieve Kut. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
Obituaries published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 14th February 1916 :- “CHAPLIN. - Killed January 6th-7th, 1916, Persian Gulf, Lance-Corporal Samuel Chaplin, 2nd Leicesters. A noble hero he has died. - From his loving wife and children. “CHAPLIN. - Killed in action, January 6th-7th, 1916, Persian Gulf, Lance-Corporal Samuel Chaplin, 2nd Leicesters. A noble hero he has died, his duty bravely done. - Mr. and Mrs. Dyer, Flo., Beatie, Gertie, and Elsie."
