John George Robinson

John (Jack) George was the son of Charles William Robinson and his wife Martha Ann Robinson nee Wood. Charles William was born on 30 May 1870 in Northampton, the son of William and Alice Mary Robinson; he was baptised on 23 June 1870 at Yadley-Hastings, Northampton. Martha Ann, the daughter of John and Mary A Wood, was born on 3 January 1873 at Mow Cop Cheshire, and baptised on 2 March 1873 at Odd Rode Cheshire. Charles William and Martha Ann were married at the parish church in Audley, Stafford, on 10 June 1894. They had three children: Mabel b. 1896 (J/A/S Walsall Staffordshire) and baptised on 4 August 1895 at Hope, Staffordshire, John George b. 1897 (A/M/J Chesterfield) and baptised on 20 May 1897 at Chesterfield Holy Trinity, and Alice Mary b. 16 June 1909 (J/A/S Mansfield). In 1901 John George (3) was living with his maternal grandparents, John and Mary Ann Wood, at 16 Regent Road, Hanley, Staffordshire. His parents and sister Mabel have not yet been traced on the 1901 Census. By 1911 Charles William (40), a confectioner sugar boiling, and Martha Ann (38) were living at 86 Westfield Lane, Mansfield, with their three children, Mabel (15), John George (13) a confectioner sugar boiling, and Alice (1). Also in the household on the night of the census was Martha's sister, Mary Eliza Wood (35). His father, Charles William, had enlisted in the Royal Artillery at the age of 18 (length of service not known), and on 20 April 1915 aged 44 years 11 months, he attested in the Army Service Corps (2100047). He was then living at 69 Willoughby Street, Lenton. His only dependant child was Alice Mary (b. 16 June 1909). Charles served at home from 20 April until 24 February 1916 and then in France from 25 February 1916 (374 Coy). According to his army record he was discharged 'No longer physically fit for war service Para. 392 (XVI) KR' but the date this took effect is not clear from the documents. However, it appears he was still in France when his son was killed on 27 June 1917. At the time the 1939 England & Wales register was compiled, Charles William Robinson (b. 30 May 1870), a sugar confectioner, was living at 95 Willoughby Street, Lenton, with his wife Martha A Robinson (b. 3 January 1873). Their eldest daughter, Mabel Robinson, had probably died in 1932 (Sept Mansfield) age 36. Charles William died in 1951 (Jun Nottingham) aged 81. Martha has not yet been traced after 1939 or Alice Mary after 1917.
