Family History

John Thomas Briggs was born on 23rd March 1895 at Ropsley he was the son of William Briggs a farm labourer and the late Charlotte Briggs née Fisher of Ropsley, Grantham, Lincolnshire. His father William Briggs was born in 1858 at Ropsley and his mother Charlotte Fisher was born in 1859 at Welby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded n the Grantham Registration District, they went on to have the following children all born in Ropsley Ernest William b1889, Lily b1891, Stephen b1892, John Thomas b1895 and Mary Elizabeth b1899. His mother Charlotte died in 1901 aged 42 yrs the death was recorded in the Grantham Registration District. In the 1911 census his father William is living at Ropsley, he is shown as being 53 yrs of age a widow and farm labourer he is living with his married nephew Samuel Briggs 29 yrs a farm labourer and his wife Elizabeth 32 yrs and their son Alfred 7 yrs. John married his wife Millicent Warwick (born 23rd January 1893 at Saxilby, Lincoln), in 1915 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district, she was late of Thorney, Newark. They had a daughter Doris Margaret born 21st January 1916 they lived at Thorney Brickyard near Newark. Commencing 15th January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private John Briggs enlisted at Lincoln whist residing at Newark, he served with the 1/4th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 26th June 1916 and is buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, Pas de Calais, France.
