Ernest Leopold Woods was born in 1879 at Sutton on Trent and was the son of William a basket maker and Mary Ann Woods, née Wooding of High Street, Sutton on Trent. His father William was born in 1843 at Ryston, Cambridgeshire and his mother Mary Ann Wooding was born in 1844 at Northampton, they were married on 7th March 1869 at All Saints Church, Northampton. They went on to have 9 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were William b 1870 Northampton, Albert Edward b1872 Sutton on Trent, Charles Fred b1874 Sutton on Trent, Florence b1878 Sutton on Trent, Ernest Leopold b1879 Sutton On Trent and Edgar b1881 Sutton on Trent. In the 1911 census we find that Ernest Leopold is living away from his home, he is living at 13 Nicholas Street, Chester, he is shown as 33 yrs of age a gents outfitters assistant, he is a boarder lodging with Arthur Edwards 50 yrs a cabinet maker and his family. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at High Street, Sutton on Trent, they are shown as William 68 yrs a basket maker he is living with his wife Mary Ann 67 yrs and their children, Albert Edward 39 yrs a basket maker and their widowed daughter Florence Jordon 33 yrs and their grandson Cecil Jordan 2 yrs of age.
Private Ernest Leopold Woods attested on 24th February 1916 at Chester, giving his age as 37 yrs and his address as 13 Nicholas Street, Chester, he stated his occupation was that of a gents outfitter, his next of kin was his father William Woods of Sutton on Trent, Newark, Nottinghamshire, he was posted to the reserves the same day. On 22nd March 1916 he was mobilised and posted to the 10th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. promoted to Lance Corporal on 19th April 1916 he died on 20th April 1916 at Press Heath, Whitchurch of pneumonia, he had served for 56 days, he saw no service abroad. He is buried at Sutton-on-Trent Cemetery, Nottinghamshire.
