Edward Wood was born in 1898 at Basford, he was the son of the late John Arthur Wood and Sarah Wood née Atkin of Vernon Road, Basford. His father John Arthur was born in 1873 at Nottingham, he died in 1900 aged 27 yrs, his mother Sarah Atkin was born in 1871 at Basford, they were married in 1893 at Nottingham and had 3 other children, John Arthur born b1894, Florence b1896 and Harold b1900. Following the death of his father his mother Sarah went on to re marry in 1907 at Nottingham to David Clark a coal miner hewer, who was born in 1855 at Gunby, Grantham, they had further children, Fanny b1904 George b1907, Leslie b1909 and Stephen b1910. In the 1911 census the family is living at 9 Reigate Road, Basford David Clarke 56 years a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah 40 yrs and their children, Arthur Wood 17 yrs a brewer, May 15 yrs a bleacher, Edward Wood 13 yrs a scholar, Harold Wood 11 yrs, Fanny Wood 7 yrs, George Clark 4 yrs, Leslie Clark 2 yrs and Stephen Clark 1 month old.
Private Edward Wood enlisted at Nottingham he initially served with the service number 4958 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 18th November 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
