Family History

Ernest Pilkington was born in 1896 at Danethorpe and was the son of Henry a farmer and Mary Matilda Pilkington née Hawley of The Rhymes Farm, Sutton Trent. His father Henry was born in 1859 at Sneinton and his mother Mary Matilda Hawley was born in 1857 at Risley, Derbyshire, they were married on 23rd February 1881 at Risley and went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed on the 1901/1911 census were Frank Hawley b1884 Nottingham, Charles b1891 Car Colston, Florence b1893 Car Colston, Ernest b1896 Danethorpe, John Thomas b1899 Danethorpe and Herbert b1901 Coddington. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Rhymes Farm, Sutton on Trent and are shown as Henry 50 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Mary Matilda 55 yrs and their children, Charles 20 yrs a farmers son working on the farm, Ernest 16 yrs farmers son working on the farm, John Thomas 12 yrs a scholar, Herbert 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Lance Corporal Ernest Pilkington enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Sutton on Trent, he served with the 2/5th battalion North Staffordshire Regiment . He was killed in action on 21st March 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
