Arthur Gerald Longmate was born in 1885 at Sutton on Trent and was the son of George a farmer and Jane Longmate née Robinson of 'Hill View' Sutton-on-Trent Newark. His father George was born in 1851 at Sutton on Trent, his mother Jane Robinson was born in 1851 at Gamston, they were married on 14th August 1879 at Sutton on Trent and went on to have 5 children, 1 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Christopher Samuel b 1880 Sheffield, Arthur Gerald b1885 Sutton on Trent, Dorothy Ann b1888 Cudworth and Margery b1893 at Sutton on Trent In the 1911 census his parents are living at Sutton on Trent and are shown as George 60 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Jane 60 yrs.

Military History

Private Arthur Gerald Longmate enlisted at Shrewsbury, he served with the 5th battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 10th February 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
