Thomas Henry Birkby was born in 1893, he was baptised on 7th June 1893 at St Mary's church, Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ruth Ellen Birkby née Wilson of Water Lane Radcliffe on Trent. Thomas was born in 1855 in Nottinghamshire, he died in 1900 he was aged 45 yrs, Ruth Ellen Wilson was born in 1856 at Bingham, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham, they had 4 children. In 1911 Thomas is living at 1 Bolton Terrace, Radcliffe on Trent, he is living with William Cooling 46 yrs a bricklayer, he is living with his mother Ruth Ellen Birkby 53 yrs who is a housekeeper for William Cooling. Thomas is 17 yrs and is a bricklayers labourer, also living at the address is John Birkley 14 yrs an errand boy.

Military History

Gunner Thomas Henry Birkby enlisted on 30th December 1914 at Newcastle Upon Tyne giving his age as 21 yrs and 7 months, his address was Water Lane, Radcliffe on Trent and he was a bricklayers labourer, his next of kin was his mother Ellen of the same address. Posted to the Royal Field Artillery he landed in France on 9th September 1915. Killed in action on 26th November 1917 he is buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery Grave Reference: 3 E 23
