Thomas Henry Stringer was born in 1883 at Radford and was the son of Henry Joseph a lace curtain draughtsman and Mary Stringer née Varney of 3 Byfield Street Radford Nottingham. His father Henry Joseph was born in 1860 at Radford and his mother Mary Jane Varney was born in 1861 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, they were married in 1882 at Nottingham and had the following children, Thomas Henry b1883 Radford, Ada b1885 Radford, Lily b1890 Radford, Percival Walter b1893 Radford, Clarice b1895 Radford, Harry b1901 Radford and Connie b1904 Radford. In 1911 census Thomas Henry has left the home address , he was boarding at 11 Burns Lane, Warsop near Mansfield he was shown as being 28 yrs single and a plumber, he is boarding with Frank Bannister 36 yrs a coal miner and his family. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 3 Byfield Street, Nottingham and are shown as Henry Joseph 51 yrs a lace curtain draughtsman, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 50 yrs and their children, Lily 21 yrs a pattern girl, Percival Walter 18 yrs a clerk, Clarice 16 yrs a pattern girl, Harry 10 yrs a scholar and Connie 7 yrs a scholar. .
Corporal Thomas Henry Stringer enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was attached to 139th Trench Mortar Battery and was killed in action on 29th September 1918 and is buried at Bellicourt British Cemetery, France. Plot 3. Row P. Grave 5. The award of his Military Medal was announced in the 'London Gazette,' 12th March 1917.'
Obituary published 4th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post ;- “STRINGER. – Killed in action Sept. 29th, 1918, Cpl. Thomas Henry Stringer, M.M., Trench Mortar Battery, late Robin Hoods, dearly loved eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Stringer, aged 36 years. Deeply mourned.” In memoriam published 29th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post:- “ERINGER. – [sic] In loving memory of our dear brother, Corpl. T. H.
