Family History

Charles Darker was born in Radford in 1892 and was the son of Hugh Watson a baker and Eva Darker. In 1911 they lived at 37 Kirkwhite Street Meadows Nottingham and later at 2 Linden Grove Beeston Nottingham. He was formerly of 111 Ilkeston Road Nottingham. His father Hugh Watson Darker was born in Carlton in 1865 , he was married twice , his first wife was Emily Sarah Guy whom he married in 1881 in Nottingham they went on to have 2 children , Hugh b1885 and William b 1887, his wife Emily died in 1890 in Nottingham she was 32 yrs of age, he then married Eva Rogers in 1890 in Nottingham and they went on to have 1 son Charles Darker b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 Kirkwhite Court, Meadows, Nottingham, and are shown as Hugh Watson 46 yrs a baker, he is living with his second wife Eva 46 yrs and their son Charles 19 yrs an apprentice mechanic.

Military History

Private Charlie Darker, enlisted at Nottingham and served with 1/1st South Notts. Hussars. He landed in Egypt on 26th April 1915 and was killed in action on 30th September 1917. He is buried in Struma Military Cemetery.Grave Reference: VII E 6

Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 16 October 1916: 'Darker. Killed in action September 30th 1916, Private Charles Darker, 1060 South Notts Hussars, late of 111 Ilkeston Road.' In memoriam published 30th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “DARKER. – In loving memory of our dear son Charlie, of the South Notts. Hussars, who was killed in action September 30th, 1916. Shattered hope, but sweet memories left behind. – From his loving mother and father. “DARKER. – In loving remembrance of our dear friend, Charlie Darker, killed in action September 30th, 1916.
