Edward was born in 1883 in Nottingham and was the son of Albert James a wicker basket maker and Emma Shipsides née Lowe. His father Albert James was born in 1854 in Cromford, Derbyshire and his mother Emma Lowe was born in 1852 in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 their marriage being recorded in the Basford Registration District. They went on to have 8 children , however sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were :- Eliza Ann b1878, James William b1881, Edward b1883, Joseph Sherburn b1885, Frederick b1888, Percy b1889 and Florence Ruth b1896 all the children were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 105 Egypt Road, New Basford, Nottingham, they are shown as Albert James 57yrs head of the family a wicker basket maker, he is living with his wife Emma 59 yrs and their children, Edward 28 yrs a coal miner, Joseph Sherbourne 26 yrs a dyers labourer in bleach works, Percy 22 yrs a coal miner and Florence Ruth 15 yrs an upholsterer. Edward married Kate Kelham on 5th April 1913 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they lived at Lindum Grove, Meadow Lane, Nottingham they went on to have 2 children Stella born 10th July 1914 and Henry born 22nd March 1915.(Henry was born 12 days after his fathers death)
Private Edward Shipsides enlisted at Nottingham on 21st May 1902, he was 19 yrs of age, his occupation was that of a coal miner, he was married his next of kin was his wife Kate their address was 46 Suez Street, New Basford, Nottingham. He served on the home front from 21st May 1902 until 8th February 1904, when he went with his regiment 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment to India. He returned home from India on 24th March 1905 where he remained until he re enlisted on 8th June 1914 now aged 31 yrs and one month. He embarked at Southampton on 11th December 1914, landing the following day in France. He was killed in action on 10th March 1915 and is buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France.
His younger brother Percy also served in the 'Great War' he served in the 6th battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 17th July 1918 and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany. In memoriam published 10th March 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “SHIPSIDES. – In loving memory of Pte. E. Shipsides, who was killed in action, March 10th, 1915.
