Family History

Charles Belfield Walton was born in 1891 at North Muskham and was the son of Edward Charles a joiner and Annie Eliza Walton née Belfield of North Muskham Newark. His father Edward Charles was born in 1854 at Geelong, Australia and his mother Annie Eliza Bradley was born in 1858 at Cromwelll, they were married in 1885 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have the 6 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Catherine Isabella b1888, Edward Denys Losco b1889, Hilda Mary b1894 and Maggie Annie Walton b1897 all were borth at North Muskham. In the 1911 census the family were living at North Muskham and were shown as Edward Charles Walton 57 yrs a joiner and sectional wood and iron builder, he was living with is wife Annie Eliza 53 yrs and their children, Catherine Isabella 23 yrs no occupation listed, Edward Denny 22 yrs a joiner, Charles Belfield 20 yrs a joiner, Hilda Mary 17 yrs a home help and Maggie Annie 14 yrs a scholar. His bother Edward Denny Walton served in India returning safely to inherit the family firm.

Military History

Private Charles Belfield Walton initially enlisted and served with the service number 35270 with 2/8th Sherwood Foresters. He served with them during the Irish Rebellion and then went to France where he was transferred to the 7th battalion King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 2nd October 1918 and is buried at Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery, Nord, France.

Extra Information

Article published 26th October 1918 in the Newark Herald :- Youngest son of Edward Charles Walton, North Muskham. Prior to the war he was a bell-ringer and choir boy at North Muskham church. He joined the Sherwood Foresters and was in the Irish Rebellion, but upon going to France was transferred to the K.S.L.I. His brother, Pte. Denis Walton, is serving in India.
