Archibald Edgar Bamford was born in 1894 in Nottingham and was the son of Joseph a gas meter inspector and his first wife Mary Ann Elizabeth Bamford, née Wood. His father Joseph was born in 1858 in Heaton Norris, Lancashire and his mother Mary Ann Elizabeth Wood was born in 1861, they were married in 1887 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Mabel Annie b1889, Joseph Wood b1890, Raymond Cecil b1892, Archibald Edgar b1894 and Edwin Harold b1901, all were born in Nottingham. His mother Mary Ann Elizabeth died in 1900 in Nottingham she was 39 yrs of age. His father remarried in 1901 to Georgina Noy at Nottingham ,they went on to have daughter Adeline Isobel born 1902 in Nottingham His father Joseph died in 1902 at Nottingham , he was 47 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 19 Cowley Street, Old Basford and are shown as ,Georgina 38 yrs a widow , she is living with her daughter Adelaide Isobel 9 yrs and her step children, Mabel Annie 22yrs a lace clipper, Joseph Wood 21 yrs a hosiery clerk, Raymond Cecil 19 yrs a hosiery clerk, Archibald Edgar 17 yrs a hosiery clerk, and Edwin Harold 10 yrs a scholar.
Private Archibald Bamford, enlisted on 4th January 1915 at Nottingham , he gave his age as 21 yrs and nine months, his address as 19 Cowley Street, Old Basford, Nottingham and his occupation as a hosiery factory hand, his next of kin was his mother Georgina of the same address. He was posted on 9th January 1915 and served with the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He landed in France on 4th September 1915 and was killed in action on 27th September 1915. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
