Born at 5, Jewry Court, Jewry Street Leicester, Arthur was the son of John William Adams (b.28/9/1869) and Kate Adams (née Robinson b. 25/8/1871). He was the brother of Florence, Grace, William and Kate Adams. In 1901 they lived at 16 Tyler Street Nottingham, sharing with two other families named Notman and Bentley. John William Adams died between 1/4/1901 and 22/8/1901 when Kate and her five children were admitted to the workhouse in Radford on Hartley Road (formerly Outgang Lane). Baby Kate was fostered out to Guardians at Beech Avenue Workhouse, Nottingham where she died aged 11 months. Kate senior left the workhouse with permission 13/9/1902 and did not return. Her fate is unknown (some family members believe she committed suicide). William and Arthur Adams left the workhouse to be placed with James and Emily Jennings at 7, Cowley Street, Basford Nottingham. It is possible they had adult baptisms into the Mormon Church. Arthur's will named Emily Jenkins as his mother. Florence and Grace Adams (Maureen Pennell's grandmother) were sent to The Crescent, Filey, East Yorkshire as domestic servants.
Arthur Adams enlisted (3/8th Sherwood Foresters [4380]) with his brother William 21/10/1915, standing 5' 2" and claiming to be 19. Under age [17], he was discharged after 21 days. Later re-enlisting into the West Yorkshire Regiment, he died of dysentery at P/W Camp Linburg, France.
