Family History

Edward was born in Worksop in 1888 to Henry and Sarah Dunstan the fourth of eight children. His father was a hewer in the pit and by the time he was 13 Edward was working underground as a pony driver. The family lived in various addresses on Kilton Road but by 1911 Edward was married with twin daughters and working as a coal hewer himself living at Shirebrook, from there to Bentley near Doncaster.

Military History

Edward became a Private in the newly formed 2nd/5th Battalion of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with which he went to France in 1915 having trained in the Dukeries around Retford. His battalion was in the 187th Brigade of the 6th (2nd West Riding ) Division which saw heavy fighting in the Arras area towards the end of the German Spring offensives of 1918. Edward was seriously wounded and died in hospital at Etaples on 19 May 1918 where he is buried in the Military Cemetery. Courtesy of Robert Illett
