Albert James Davis

Albert James Davis Towards the end of 1917 the 46th North Midland Division returned to the pit tips and pit villages to the area in which it had suffered so heavily in the aftermath of the Battle of Loos in 1915. In the 138th Brigade of this Division, the 1st/5th Lincolnshire Regimant, included Private Albert Davis. This Battalion relieved the 1st/4th Lincs in the front line on the 1 January 1918 and two days afterwards suffered from heavy trench mortar and artillery bombardment followed by a trench raid by the enemy. Albert Davis was killed on this day and is buried in Cambrin Military Cemetery. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Davis who when in Worksop lived at, the long demolished 4 Potter Street. Albert was born in Worksop in 1896 just before his parents moved to Grimsby to run the Clarence Hotel and it was a Lincolnshire based Territorial Army unit in which he was serving when killed in action aged 22 Courtesy of Robert Illett.
