Military History

It was from Barnsley, where he had a job as a grocer’s assistant that George enlisted and served in ‘A’ Company of the 2nd Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, a regular army unit. The battalion was serving in the sodden area near to the coast at Nieport in Belgium with the Germans preparing for an attack when George was killed. Nieuport Memorial
