Henry Thorey was born in Worksop in 1892, the son of William Clarke, a joiner and carpenter. Henry lost his mother early in his life and her sister Margaret joined the household as housekeeper and eventually became the second Mrs Clarke. The family lived at at Torworth and then Nottingham with Henry taking a job as a grocer's warehouse man just before the War,
In 1917 he was serving with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters in the 46th North Midland Division when in June it returned to the site of its trauma of October 1917 at Loos. In what is known as the battle of the Lens, the division attacked over the lens-Lieven Road and was partially successful in taking its objectives but found itself too weak to withstand the usual German counter-attack later in the day of the 1st July 1917. Henry is recorded as being killed on this day and is buried in Loos British Cemetery. Courtesy of Robert Illett
