Military History

At Worksop as a child, he and his mother Abigail, lived with his aunt at 54 Creswell Street. However, the family moved to West Yorkshire and at the time of the outbreak of war Walter was a single man living at Allerton Bywater which perhaps explains his decision to give up his work at the pit and volunteer. Originally in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry he was moved to the 6th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment which saw action at Gallipoli and as part of the 38th Brigade of the 13th Division, was in December 1916 advancing along the Tigris near Kut in Mesopotamia (now Iraq) when Walter was killed in action. He has no known grave but his name appears on the Basra Memorial. Courtesy of Robert Illett
