Sarah Ann Turner was a native of Worksop. She married Leonard Batty, a coach builder, in 1876 in Worksop. The couple had seven children, Eliza, Rosetta, Ernest, Harriet, Florence Ann, George Leonard and Phyliss. By 1881 the family were living in Worksop at 34 Abbey Street. George Leonard, or Leonard as he was usually referred to, left Worksop and in 1911 he was living in Ecclesall, Sheffield at 132 Lansdowne Road with his mother and youngest sister, Phyliss. At the beginning of the year 1914 Leonard married in Sheffield to Alice Ada Broomhead which must have been just prior to his enlistment.
(George) Leonard Batty Leonard Batty served with the first new battalion formed from 1914 volunteers of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Born in Worksop in 1890 to Leonard and Sarah Ann Batty of 34 Abbey Street he had moved to Sheffield with the family after his father died, where he married and set up home at Hill Street with his wife, Alice Ada. Leonard Batty died of wounds on 23 September 1915 possibly received in action at Hooge in the late July/early August 1915.
