Family History

Bertie Bemrose was born in 1890 in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire he was the son of Samuel a general labourer and Mary Ann Bemrose née Spencer of Lamcote, Radcliffe on Trent. His father Samuel was born in 1864 in Radcliffe and his mother Mary Ann Spencer was born in 1867 in Radcliffe, they were married in 1887 in Radcliffe. They went on to have 7 children , sadly 1 died in infancy all their surviving children were born in Radcliffe, they were William b1880, Bertie b1890, Percy b1893, Mildred b1895, Eugine b1897 and Elsie b1899. In the 1911 census Bertie has left home, he is shown as being 21 yrs and a Private Soldier, he is in barracks at Crowhill Fort in Devon with 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters. In the same census his family are living at Lamcote, Radcliffe on Trent and are shown as Samuel 46 yrs head of the family a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 44 yrs and his children Eugine 14 yrs , Elsie 12 yrs, his eldest son William 22 yrs a farm labourer who is married and has a wife Harriett 21 yrs and their son Leonard Bemrose 1 yr.

Military History

Lance Corporal Bertie Bemrose enlisted into the regular army on 20th December 1909 , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 11 months , his occupation as farm labourer. He served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire ) Regiment on the home front from 20 Dec 1909 until 12 Dec 1911. He then went to India and served there from 12 Dec 1911 until 2nd Sept 1914. He served in India with 1st Bn Sherwood Foresters for 2 years 7 months. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was promoted to lance corporal on 28th June 1917. He was killed inaction on 29 May 1918. He was killed at the battle of Aisne, France (May 29th –June 6th 1918) he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Soissons memorial, Aisne,France

Extra Information

His brother Percy Bemrose was also a career soldier , he served during the 'Great War' in the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment , he was killed in action on 12th March 1915 during the battle of Neuve Chappelle, his has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial.
