Family History

Aubrey Charles Nixon Whiston was the son of Nathan and Ellen Whiston (née Nixon). His father Nathan was born in Checkley, Staffordshire,in 1873, the son of Nathan and Louisa Whiston. His mother Ellen was born in Cheadle in 1876, the daughter of Isaac Nixon, a miller and farmer, and his wife Annie. Nathan and Ellen were married on 20 January 1897 at Christ Church, Upper Tean, Checkley, where they were both living. They had three children who were all born in Upper Tean, Checkley: Aubrey Charles Nixon b. 28 October 1897 bap. Upper Tean Christ Church 8 December 1897, Nathan William (k/a William) and Helen Rita. In 1901 Nathan (27) an iron fitter, and Ellen (24) were living on Uttoxeter Road, Tean, Checkley, with their sons Aubrey (3) and William (1). Also in the household was Ellen's widowed mother, Annie Elizabeth Nixon (56). By 1911 Nathan, now a general engineer in a textile factory, and Ellen were living on Draycott Road, Tean, with their three school-age children Aubrey, William and Helen (9). Aubrey joined the Society of the Sacred Mission at Kelham Hall in May 1914 as a school boy. Ellen Whiston died in 1919 (J/A/S Cheadle) and Nathan married secondly Sarah Ann Elizabeth Lewis (née Hargreaves), a widow, at Urmson St Clement, Lancashire, in 1921. Nathan died in 1954.

Military History

Gunner Aubrey Charles Nixon Whiston enlisted in September 1916 and served with 'C' Bty 245th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Aubrey died of wounds at No. 64 West Lancs. Field Ambulance on 27 April 1918. He was buried in Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium (grave ref. 13.G.6). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Thy will be done' Aubrey is also cmmemorated on WMR38324 'Men of Tean', Tean Staffordshire, and WMR38451 'Upper Tean WW1 & WW2', Tean Staffordshire. Registers of Soldiers' Effects: his father Nathan was his legatee. WW1 Pension Ledgers: named his father Nathan.
