When John Nuttall married a widow, Emma Cliff, she already had two children, Mary and Martha, from a previous marriage. John and Emma married at Hasland, Chesterfield in 1877. Their first child, Maria died in infancy but had they four more children, all born at Hasland, Alice born in 1882, Horace in 1884, Edgar in 1886 and Clara born in 1889. Emma died the following year in 1890 when she was aged 39. In 1891 the family were living at 21 Albert Street, Chesterfield and on the 22nd July 1893, John re-married to Elizabeth Caygill. By 1901, now resident at 39 Brunswick Street, Chesterfield, eldest son, 17 year old Horace, was working as a pit pony driver. It is reported that he joined the army in 1903 but in 1907, he was in Chesterfield where he married Nina Bradshaw. His step mother in died 1902 leaving his father as the sole occupier of 18 Durrant Road, Chesterfield in 1911.
Lance-Sergeant H Nuttall Worksop Guardian 6 October 1916 Official notification has reached Mrs Nuttall, Carr Vale, Bolsover, of the death in action, a fortnight ago, of her husband Lance-Sergeant H Nuttall, Grenadier Guards. Deceased served eleven years in the Army before the outbreak of the present war. He was mentioned in despatches on January 1st of the present year. He leaves a widow and four young children. He is also named on the Bolsover & Hillstown war memorial with the following published details:- Lance Sergeant 11091, 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Killed in action between 14th and 17th September 1916. Born Hasland, Chesterfield, enlisted Chesterfield. Husband of Nina Nuttall, of 34, Charlesworth St., Carr Vale, Bolsover, Derbyshire. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 8 D.
