Family History

Ernest Clifford Brown was born on 27th June 1886 at Worksop, he was the son of John William Brown & Harriet Bloomer, John William was born in 1840 at Duddington, Northamptonshire, he died in 1917 aged 57 yrs, Harriett Bloomer was born in 1853 at Doncaster she died in 1911 aged 58 yrs, they were married at Sheffield on 2nd Augustus 1873. The birth locations of their children show that they were constantly on the move around the south Yorkshire, Derbyshire area, John William being a general labourer. They had had five children by 1881, Kate born 1869 , Sarah Ann born 1873, Nellie in 1875, John W in 1979 and George H born in 1880. They arrived in Worksop by 1881 and took residency of 53 Marecroft Worksop. Whilst here they had two more children, James in 1883 and Ernest in 1886. By 1887 they moved on, this time to Sheffield where they had their two last children, Lillian in 1891 and Alexander in 1896 and by 1901 were living at 7 Brough Street, Nether Hallam, Sheffield. Ernest Clifford Brown married Sarah Leach (born 5th January 1886 at Rochdale) on 4th April 1907 at Rochdale, they lived at 10 Moorfield Place Turner Street, Rochdale, they had a son Ernest Clifford born 10th October 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Foot Cottages, Spotland Road, Rochdale. Ernest Clifford 24 yrs is a boilers labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 25 yrs an asbestos rover, commencing 20th September 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings and 1 pence a week.

Military History

Private Ernest Brown enlisted Sheffield, died of wounds France Flanders on 18th October 1914 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. s. Awarded British and Victory Medal and 1914 star, qualifying date being 8/9/1914
