Dent Stokeld was born at Stainton, Durham in 1891 to George Stokeld, a woodman, and Margaret Sedgwick who had married in 1883. Dent had two siblings who were also born and bought up in Stainton, Elizabeth 1885, and May in 1894. By the age of 20, in 1911, Dent had left Stainton and was one of many servants working as a domestic post-man on the Vaynol Estate at Bangor, Caernarvonshire, Wales. Sometime after this date and prior to the war, he had moved and was working at the Welbeck estate, Notts.
Dent is recorded as enlisting at London, joining the 8th Service Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. His Battalion landed at Le Havre 26 July 1915 and were soon in action in the Battle of Loos on the 25th September. Despite German shelling and British gas blowing back on them during the attack, the 8th pressed on leading the attack and captured the German position. Dent was wounded in the battle and died of his wounds. He was buried in the Chocques Military Cemetery, France.
