Harry Saunders was born in 1890 at Bampton in Devon. He was the youngest son of Harry and Sarah Saunders and had five siblings, Gertrude, Charles, Ellen, Margaret and Annie. Whilst living in Bampton, Harry’s father was the proprietor of the White Horse Hotel. In 1911, Harry junior was working as a groom on the local estate, at The Stables, Stammer, Near Lewes, Sussex and prior to the war, moved to work on the Welbeck estate in Nottinghamshire.
Harry enlisted from Worksop, Notts soon after the declaration of war and went to France on the 28th November 1914. He survived three years before being killed in action. His body was never recovered and is commemorated Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France
