Herbert Charles was born in 1895 in Holme near Newark, the eldest son of Frederick a general labourer and Charlotte Key née Hagues who lived at Holme Village near Newark, Nottinghamshire. His father Frederick was born in 1857 in Langford, Nottinghamshire, his mother Charlotte Hagues was born in 1863 in Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire. They were married in 1894; the marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district. Frederick and Charlotte went on to have a further son Ernest born 1903 in Holme. In the 1911 census the family are living at Holme, Newark, and are shown as Frederick 54 yrs a general labourer who is living with his wife Charlotte 46 yrs and their two children Bertie (Herbert Charles) 16 yrs a general labourer and Ernest 8 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal Herbert Charles Key enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 12th September 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Panel 87 to 89.
WMA14375, inscription: 'In loving memory of Herbert Charles Key, Lance Corporal 1/8th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action in No Man's Land in France, September 12th 1917 aged 22 years. He died the noblest death a man may die, fighting for God, and right, and liberty, and such a death is immortality.'
