Family History

Thomas Archibald Taylor was born in 1880 at Ripley and was the son of the late Arthur Taylor and his wife Maria Taylor née Stevenson. His father Arthur was born in 1857 at Alderwasley, Derbyshire and his mother was born in 1854 at Bilborough, Nottingham, they were married ion 5th February 1876 at the Congregational Church, Victoria Street, Derby, they went on to have the following children, Arthur b1877, Ernest b1878, Thomas Archibald b1880 and Percy b1881 all were born in Derbyshire. Thomas married his wife Ethel May Sowerby on 5th December 1909 at Hyson Green, Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Julia May born 16th September 1911, William Lawrence born 22nd September 1913 and Archibald, born 30th July 1915. Theye lived at 34 Balderton Gate, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 111 Bowbridge Road, Newark and are shown as Thomas 31 yrs a milk seller, he is living with his wife Ethel 27 yrs and his widowed mother in law Julia Sowerby 67 yrs she is shown as a boarder. Following his death his widow Ethel was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence for herself and her three children, to commence on 16th December 1918 His widow lived at The Hall, Burton Joyce, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Thomas Archibald Taylor attested on 9th December 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 36 yrs and 125 days, his address was 34 Balderton Gate, Newark, he was a milk seller. His next of kin was his wife Ethel May of the same address, he was posted to the reserves the following day. Mobilised for war on 7th August 1916 he was posted to the Army Service Corps on 9th August 1916. On 29th September 1917 he landed in France and was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment on 30th September 1917. He was killed in action on 15th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium
