Charles Cartwright was born in 1898 at Norwell and was the son of Charles a waggoner and Agnes Cartwright née Walker of 6 Hawton Grange Newark and later the Grange Cottages , Hawton, Newark. His father was born in 1868 at Norwell and his mother Agnes Walker was born in 1870 at Eakring, they were married on 5th December 1887 at Eakring and went on to have 11 children, Albert b1889 Bathley, Edith b1891 North Muskham, Arthur b1892 North Muskham, George William b1893 North Muskham, Wallace b1896 Norwell, Charles 1898 Norwell, Beatrice b1901 Thorpe, Ivy b1903 Thorpe, Walter b1905 Thorpe, Herbert b1907, Thorpe and Agnes May b1909 Thorpe. In the 1911 census the family is living at Thorpe Lodge near Newark and are shown as Charles 43 yrs a waggoner, he is living with his wife Agnes 41 yrs and their children, Albert 22 yrs a horseman, Arthur 19 yrs a farm worker, George William 18 yrs a farm worker, Wallace 15 yrs a farm worker, Charles 13 yrs a scholar, Herbert 4 yrs Beatrice 10 yrs a scholar, Ivy 8 yrs a scholar and Agnes May 2 years of age.
Private Charles Cartwright enlisted on 9th January 1917 at Newark, he was 18 yrs and 4 months old, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 14th May 1917 and reported to the Sherwood Foresters Depot at Derby where he was posted to the 7th reserve training battalion. He embarked from Folkstone on 19th January 1918 arriving the same day at Boulogne. He was posted to the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment on 21st January 1918 and went missing in action on 28th March 1918 and was later confirmed as killed in action on that date. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Private George William Cartwright, enlisted on 9th November 1914 at Newark , he gave his age as 19 yrs and 8 months, his address was Hawton Grange near Newark, his next of kin as was his mother Agnes of the same address. He stated he was a maltster working for Taylors of Newark. He was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He embarked from Southampton 28th June 1915 disembarking the following day at Rouen, France and was killed in action on 30th August 1915. He is buried at Woods Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. grave reference 1.A.13
