Family History

Mark was the son of the Reverend Mark Athel and Sophia Letitia Elizabeth Noble (née Richardson). His father, Mark Athel, was born in Dalton le Dale in 1862 (J/A/S Easington Durham), the son of Rev. William Noble and his wife Jane. He was baptised on 23 August 1862 in the parish church of Dalton le Dale where his father was the vicar. In 1881 the family was living in the vicarage at Eldon, Auckland, Durham. His mother, Sophia, was born in Marske, nr. Guisborough Yorkshire, (birth registered 1856 J/F/M Guisborough-Coulson), the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Richardson. In 1861 the family was living in Marske; her father was working as a certificated teacher. In 1881 Sophia was a governess living with her widowed father Robert (50) in Pickering, Yorkshire. Mark and Sophia were married at Skelton Parish church on 29 May 1890 (A/M/J Guisborough). Sophia was 33 years old and Mark 27; he was then living in Hull. Their son Mark Athel Chadwick Edgar was born in Hull, birth registered 1892 (J/F/M Hull); he was probably their only child. In 1891, Mark, a clerk in holy orders, and Sophia were living in Mexborough, Doncaster. Sophia died in 1898 (J/F/M Malton Yorkshire) aged about 37. The widowed Mark was vicar of All Saints, North Dalton, nr. Sheffield, in 1901. living at the vicarage, while his son, aged nine, was a boarder at the Archbishop Holgate's School, Hull Road, York. Mark (38) of 47 Lister Street, Hull, married Jessie Williamson (27), the daughter of Edward Williamson and also of Hull, at St James' parish church on 24 July 1901 (J/A/S Hull). Mark and Jessie had at least five children: Marion Eveleigh b. 1902 (O/N/D Malton Yorkshire), Phyllis Lidemore b. 1904 (J/A/S Malton), Kenneth William b. 1906 (A/M/J Malton), Brenda Jessie S. b. 1907 (J/A/S Malton) and Gordon Lang b. 1909 (J/F/M Malton Yorkshire). In 1911 Mark was the vicar of the parish church of East Acklam, Malton, and living at the vicarage with his wife and five children. His son, Mark, by his first marriage has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census; he would have been about 19 years old and may have been at college or university. Mark snr. was still vicar at East Acklam in 1913 but was appointed to the parish of St John the Baptist Treswell on 26 November 1918; more than a year after the death of his son in Egypt. Mark snr. died in 1930 (J/A/S East Retford Notts); he was probably still vicar of Treswell as the next incumbent was not appointed until 31 July the following year.
