Family History

Horace Lindsey was born in 1890 at Melton Mowbray and was the son of John a gateman and Ann North Lindsey née Whittle of the Gate House, Gonalston, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1851 and his mother Ann North Whittle was born in 1849 both were born in Whissendine, Rutland, they were married in 1872, their marriage was recorded in the Oakham registration district. They went on to have the following children, Laura b1873 Whissendine, Annie b1877 Whissendine, Leah b1879, ,Ernest Joseph b1887 Stamford Harold b1889 Melton Mowbray, Horace b1890 Melton Mowbray, and Gertrude b1893 Stamford, In the 1911 census the family are living at Gonalston and are shown as John 60 yrs a gateman for the Midland Railway company, he is living with his wife Ann 62 yrs and their children Laura 37 yrs no occupation listed, Ernest 24 yrs a lithographer and Horace 21 yrs a baker.

Military History

Private Horace Lindsey, was living at 63 Woolmer Road, Nottingham, when he enlisted in the city on 7th December 1914 giving his occupation as journeyman baker, he gave his age as 25 yrs and 7 months his next of kin was his father John of Gonalston. He served with the 14th Field Bakery, Army Service Corps, and embarked from Southampton on 18th May 1915 disembarking the following day at Le Harve. He died of heart failure following pleurisy at the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital on 27th August 1916. He was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery Pas de Calais, France. grave reference 8.B.161
